Miss Suzy's Easter Surprise

Miss Suzy's Easter Surprise
Miriam Young ~ Arnold Lobel ~ Four Winds Press, 1972

Those of you who don't celebrate Easter, I hope you had an awesome weekend. And those of you who do, I hope you had an equally awesome day. Whether or not you celebrate or how you celebrate the holiday doesn't really matter when it comes to the awesomeness that is Miss Suzy.

One of a handful of sequels that Young and Lobel created after the classic Miss Suzy (including Miss Suzy's Birthday), this story follows the lovely Miss S on a Easter holiday when she inadvertently becomes a mother.

So we all remember Miss Suzy's beloved oak tree home, no? The one she loves more than anything and was almost run off from by a band of evil squirrels? Well...

Miss Suzy was as busy as a squirrel could be. She was getting ready for Easter. On Saturday morning she gave her house a good cleaning, and as she worked, she sang:

I'll never move, oh no, not I,
From my dear little home so near the sky.

Well, I'm sure we all thought she would never leave her acorn-bearing place of love and residence -- that is, until she meets a mess of orphans who need her more than her house does. Will she stay in a home she loves but one that can't accommodate children or will she leave her oak for a roomier willow to support her new brood?

This housewarming heartwarming tale is less a celebration of Easter and more a meditation on appreciating the things that matter most in life. After all, home is where the heart is and not the other way around.

I remember loving "Miss Suzy" as a child, but found this one at a thrift shop before finding the original book at a library sale recently (hooray!). I'm glad you mentioned other sequels--now I'm going to have to track those down!

I never knew that Miss Suzy had sequels! The original was one of my favorite books as a child, and it became one of my three children's favorites, too!
