Where Did I Come From? NOT in Malaysia and other things that are totally awesome

Before I post my review for today I wanted to mention a few things. Over the last couple of days, my readership exploded and I couldn't quite figure out why. All the visitors seemed to arrive here by Goggling this book, Where Did I Come From? by Peter Mayle. I was flummoxed as to why that book would suddenly be of interest only to discover later that Maylasia is banning the book for moral reasons. Not just banning it, but if a bookstore is caught selling it, the owners could be jailed for up to three years. Wow. While I do empathize with cultural sensitivities, as far as I'm concerned, nothing happens in that book that doesn't happen in bedrooms all across Malaysia every night of the week.

But hey, whatever floats your boat. Or, rather, doesn't float your boat. ;)

Next, if you don't usually tune into my blog during the weekend, do so on Saturday as I'll be featuring an interview with Jon Klassen, author of the awesome I Want My Hat Back and illustrator of the equally awesome Extra Yarn as part of my weekend contemporary author series. He's an extra awesome person and lover of old books (like us)!

Also, I have my Etsy shop filled again, and over the next few days will be adding more, including some of the rarer titles we own, so check it out.

Happy hump day! (Pun totally intended.)

  3. Totally traumatizing book as a child. I remember my mother reading it to me in the car on the freeway so I couldn't run away while she was reading it. Come to think of it, that explains a lot. . .

And why would Malaysia bother with banning an over 20 year old book? I imagine there are a lot more troubling things going on than a biology book for kids.

  4. looks like malaysian politicians really know how to riducule themselfes. it's the facts of life - how can they be not appropriate and lead to bad things? not knowing them leads to far worse. sad, sad, sad - and after 40 years (sic!). some brains must work real s-l-o-w.

i recall my smaller brother rushing in to let me in on the big secret after being read the book.

He got to the part where they explained orgasm and it was sooooo cute. I had to keep a straight face on the entire time.
