Cranberry Valentine
Wende and Harry Devlin ~ Simon and Schuster, 1986
Just cause there's a Cranberry for every holiday...
Ever been stressed about not getting a valentine in the mail?
Well, loony old Mr. Whispers gets freaked when he receives a valentine, and becomes practically petrified when he keeps getting them.
"It's terrible, Maggie! Look what somebody sent me!"
He stood at Maggie's door in a fury and waved a frothy lace valentine in the air.
"It's all cupids, lovebirds, hearts and flowers. And it smells like rose perfume." He wrinkled his nose.
"How sweet," said Maggie.
"Revolting," said Mr. Whiskers.
Ah, yes. Never a dull moment in Cranberryport. Mr. Whiskers' huff doesn't quite go away until it's revealed a group of harmless old ladies have lavished him with the love instead on one singular suitor. Commitment-a-phobe Whiskers finds relief in a box of chocolates and some cake and tea, which, in true Devlin fashion, you can bake yourself.
Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

WOW. Must try to find this one. My 4 year old is obsessed by beards (he has a collection of handmade paper and wool ones he selects from each day). Mr Whiskers beard looks spectacular - it's better than Santa's!
ReplyDeleteWe've read Cranberry Thanksgiving and Cranberry Autumn. Both have been hits in our home. Sadly, our library doesn't carry this title. Another book for our inter-library loan list.
ReplyDeleteI have found the book you have mentioned here very interesting. My boy loves it and reads it quite often. The way the characters are presented is so cool.
