The Amazing Voyage of Jackie Grace
Matt Faulkner ~ Scholastic, 1990
Comic books. Graphic novels. The funnies. My son is gaga for anything that looks like a comic strip. Currently he obsessed with Tintin (still holding as his number one Halloween choice with 10 months to go - even beating out Captain Rex, thank God), Sidekicks, Meanwhile and anything else with word bubbles and action panels.
Even though Jackie Grace is just barely 20 years old, he's still old enough to be considered here, and he's certainly cartoony enough to count.
Hey, what's going on?
SORRY, LADDY. THERE'S A BIG BLOW COMING IN AND MY CREW AND I ARE STRANDED. AND YOUR MOM SAID WE COULD USE THE TUB.
My Mom?
HERE'S MY CREW NOW! MOVE YOUR DUFFS, YOU LAZY OAFS!
When a young boy's bathtub gets hijacked by a a band of salty seadogs, it's up to Jackie Grace to keep the men afloat and outwit a boatload of perilous pirates.
Filled with wonderful images and a steamer ship full of fantasy, I never tire of sitting back and enjoying the ride when a boy's imagination is at play.

This looks amazing - I'm off to track down a copy. Thanks.
When I was in school, some of my drawing teachers saud that artists who do comics for a living are some of the best draftsmen.
Hi Burgin,
My eldest son is the same age as yours and he also adores comic books and especially loves Meanwhile by Jules Feiffer too. Have you every read the Captain Raptor series by Kevin Omalley and Patrick OBrien. They are picture books written in the comic book style. My boys have loved them and your son might too. It is like Star Wars or Star Trek except with dinosaurs. I just reviewed them in November.

Hello Burgin,
This is Matt Faulkner- the author/illustrator of "The Amazing Voyage of Jackie Grace". I just want to thank you for sharing the book through your blog. I'm considering offering the book electronically as soon as I can clear my desk of current projects. One project that's making it's way to bookstores is "Gaijin: American Prisoner of War" a graphic novel do out in April, 2014 from Disney/Hyperion. It tells the tale of a Japanese/Irish American boy and his Irish American mom as they are imprisoned in a Japanese American internment camp in California during WWII. You can view some the sketches and read up on the history of the book- based upon the true story of my great aunt Adeline and her daughter Mary- on the books blog:

Again, thanks for bringing attention to good ol' Jackie Grace. One of the things I recall most clearly was the fact that this book was somewhat edgy for its time because I chose to tell the book comic book format and that was still a frowned up approach in the publishing/kids lit/librarian world in the mid-1980's. How things have changed! Yay!
Be well,
Matt Faulkner
