Counting Rhymes
Art Seiden ~ Grosset & Dunlap, 1959
First off, I wanted to mentioned that when I went to read one of my favorite blogs this morning, Kickcan & Conkers, she mentioned another blogger named Hazel Terry and when I clicked over to her site, I instantly fell in love. I know I must have visited it before, but today, one of many reasons for my instant infatuation is the fact that she owns an original edition of the Ted Hughes book, Nessie The Mannerless Monster... oh my god oh my god oh my god. So full of awesome in so many ways. The Gerald Rose illustrations are flipping gangbusters! See more of it on her flickr site and follow her blog, please. I can't wait to see what else she has up her sleeve. And if she's old hat to you Internet savvies out there, just know that sometimes I know I'm asleep at the blog wheel, so forgive me.
That said, today I'll share a tasty treat of nursery rhymes... perfect for the baby or emerging reader and illustrated by the tremendous Art Seiden.
Two Little Blackbirds
Two little blackbirds sitting on a hill.
One named Jack, the other named Jill.
Fly away, Jack! Fly away, Jill!
Come back, Jack! Come back, Jill.
That ditty, in particular, will always hold a dear place in my heart as it was the first rhyme my son learned in kindergarten. Not to mention this book has cracking great bird pictures.
I don't think you ever grow too old for nursery rhymes, so despite its board book appearance, I'll be keeping this one around until the boy cries enough!
Ahhhh. If they could just stay little...

It is so funny that you should blog about me today, and especially my love of Gerald Rose, as I have spent the afternoon nursing a sick child and ordering more old Gerald Rose books. I will of course share them when they arrive.
ReplyDeleteThank's to you and Deb for your kind words.
Best Wishes
Hazel
The old ones are the best and
'The Tiger Skin Rug' is my families favourite.
It is entirely your fault that after reading this post I went searching for more Art Seiden books. "Sonny the Bunny" is on the way to our house via Etsy.

I loved this post. Thanks for all the fun reading to pursue. My 4 year old loved vehicles more than anything when he was 2-3. I wanted to chime in with a few of his vintage car & truck favorites--in addition to the all-time-best Scarry book Burgin mentioned. If I Drove A Truck, by Miriam Young, illustrated by Robert Quakenbush (1967); Truck Song, by Diane Siebert, illustrated by Byron Barton (1984); and Katy and the Big Snow (and of course Mike Mulligan, but Katy is more beloved in our house) by Virginia Burton (1943).
ReplyDeleteJust discovered your blog and love it! This was a book I still have from when I was a kid and I am delighted that my 2 year old loves it, too. He's loved it a little too hard, but even with back cover detached, it's a keeper!
