Up for grabs this week out of our personal vintage book collection, is this little sweetheart, Mammals, part of the wee Golden Nature Guide series. If you haven't started a collection of these yet, they are a MUST. We are always adding to ours and gifting away doubles. When I was little, no books in our house saw more action than the Butterfly and Reptile editions.
To be entered to win, simply comment on this post between now and Sunday, March 20 at 11:59 PM. The winner of last week's give of Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present is Litlass. E-mail me your info to webe(at)soon(dot)com, I'll get it out today as I'm already a few weeks backed up getting the gives out. Ack!

You're so right! The entire series is great! Insects and Rocks/Minerals were heavily used when I was a kid. Although they are not vintage, our kids also live the Audubon series (especially the wildflowers one) because the pictures are so good and flipping through them is fun when they have sorted by color!
ReplyDeleteI only found your blog the other day, and I LOVE it. Children's literature is my passion, and I love old picture books. What a nice giveaway!
ReplyDeleteOooh, this one looks sweet and my nature-loving boys would love it. I will have to start being on the look-out for these!
ReplyDeleteJust stumbled upon your blog last week when looking for the book "Tell Me a Mitzi." I'd love to be able to share these vintage books with my son.

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what it is about the nature of the vintage drawing that makes it so nostalgic - the colours? the detail? We would love to have this one!
ReplyDeleteThese look great! My kids and I would love this.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a nice book, would love a copy for my daughter! Thanks for the giveaways!
ReplyDeleteThis looks so familiar to me, but I'm not sure why. My two are nature lovers, so I'll have to look into these.
ReplyDeleteNo experience with these at all, but now I'm really excited to check them out!
ReplyDeleteOOH, animal info wonderland... Nice! My kids would love to browse through this one for sure!
ReplyDeleteOooh! Right now my daughter is animal obsessed. One of her favorites is a field guide for birds. I know she would love this!

ReplyDeleteThis series is amazing! Thank you for being willing to give one away! It's a great addition to anyone's library.
ReplyDeleteMy child would love this! Thanks so much for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteMammals are my favorite animals!
ReplyDeleteI have the Birds one, and love it. I just found your blog and I'm so excited. I have all my books from when I was little and am enjoying reading them again to my daughter now. One of our faves is "The Giant Jam Sandwich." The illustrations are vintage 70's.
ReplyDeleteI adore the Golden Guides! I have the current editions of lots of them, but I only have maybe 2 of the older editions. I love those old ones, but they just don't seem to turn up very often at the thrifts and secondhand stores around here. The first Golden guide I ever had was the Seashells one, which I loved to read when I was a kid!
ReplyDeletejust found out about this blog. so great! I love looking through books like these at flea markets and used book stores.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great book! Our LGB collection grows by the week- would love to have this added to it! The greatest LGB collection I've ever seen was oddly on the pediatrics unit of our hospital.. it was a massive shelf of glimmering gold/silver binding goodness!

This book looks fantastic. I'm learning to draw and this seems like it'd be a great way to learn animal figures.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was young, my parents had a store and sold, among many other things, Golden Books. We had some of this series at home. I vividly remember this Mammals book, but my favorite was Pond Life. We had a pond behind our house and I would pore through the book identifying frogs, turtles, kingfishers and herons. Wonderful series! Thanks for posting about it. I'm reliving fabulous memories!
ReplyDeletereally nice. thanks for sharing :)
