The Silver Dandelion

Bunny's Nutshell Library
Robert Kraus ~ Harper, 1963

No update this week, but I wanted to end it with some sweet thoughts and images from one of the books in Bunny's Nutshell Library, the four volume set which also includes Springfellow's Parade, Juniper and The First Robin. I've never seen the other books or the whole thing together as a set so I can't atest for the ultimate cuteness of the lot, but I do know this...

It was a perfect day for dandelion picking, except dandelions were very hard to find and everyone was looking for them. Roger finally found a dandelion, but Martha Ant scurried in front of him and picked it. "Age before everything," she said, and scurried home to make herself a cup of dandelion tea.

Here's a flickr set with all the covers and the box. Will someone please put all these little nutshells back into print? I'm begging!

  1. I love those little books. The only nutshell library I've physically seen was the Sendak. What others are there?

  3. Ohmigod, I had the Bunny's Nutshell Library when I was a kid- and I still have it. It's one of my most precious posessions! The Silver Dandelion is such a dear little story and it really strikes a chord with me- I read it whenever I feel sad and pushed around like Roger does, and it always makes me feel better.

I want to hug your blog because you keep writing about children's books that I love, but always thought nobody else heard of them, let alone liked them!

  4. I too had this set of Bunny's Nutshell Library when I was a kid. I was just thinking about the Silver Dandelion the other day and am so happy to have found your post.

The four books were wonderful - there was a story that was so different from children's stories today. I used to bring my set with me everywhere and took it with me when we moved overseas. Your post has made me want to look for it - nearly 40 years later.

    Thanks!!

I kno of Nut Shell books you're talking about, I had them as a child. This one must have been my favourite, because it is the only one that I remember. The one that made most sense to me, the one I learned most from. Anyone with one to sell a financially embarassed, disabled, woman can contact me at sraid at livedotcom.

I'd accept a colour reproduction to hold me over as a reading copy.

  7. I had Bunny's Nutshell Library. I remembered The Silver Dandelion best. It is a good learning story, teaching children how not to be a bully, by example. It teaches sacrifice, as a kindness, & that the honorable can reach their dreams & heart's desire, thru kindness, without becoming the bully.

I'm looking for a reading copy, I'd even accept a colour pgotocopy or pdf, until this financially embarassed, physically disabled woman can afford to pay for a bound edition. I can be reached if someone has either, at
