In Pier One, out of school for some reason I can't remember, looking for accessories for the room I was getting to decorate as a way to appease me about having to move at age 16. I remember hearing the news on the store radio. Crazy, how that stuff stays in your memory forever.

I was only four when that happened -- the same age as my son, which kind of weirds me out --so I don't remember a whole lot. The thing that does stand out, oddly enough, was an episode of Punky Brewster all about the disaster that aired. I don't remember specifics, but it helped me understand on some level.

In 8th grade at Christ the King. In high school, fellow students accused me of misremembering because the public schools were out for a teacher in-service day, but Catholic schools weren't. The principal wheeled in the only TV and we watched it all day.

I was home watching the blastoff on tv, my two-month daughter cradled in my arms. I had taught briefly the year before and so I was excited that a teacher was on board. Seeing it explode was incredibly heartbreaking.

Oh!! I am taken aback, as I did not expect to see this. My heart still hurts 25 years later. This is the FIRST (EVER) of many tragedies that I have held in my heart. I was 9? in 4th or 5th grade, watching it in science class. i was stunned and so horrified. I was such a sensitive kid and could not get past the grief of the family. It was so hard for me even though I did not personally know them. Ugh, certainly a sad reminder, but such a worthwhile book to own... Did not know this book existed. thank you.
