The Easter Egg Artists
Adrienne Adams ~ Charles Scribner's Sons, 1976
Taking Good Friday off to be with my family. So, I'll leave you with this.... Since I can't write about my all time favorite, yet again (The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes... which if you do not own you should go out and buy it this very minute), Ms. Adams illustrated a handful of Easter-themed titles featuring adorable rabbits including The Easter Bunny That Overslept (written by Priscilla and Otto Friedrich) and this one that she penned herself...
There are Abbotts and there are Abbotts. These Abbots are rabbits. The rabbit Abbotts make designs on Easter eggs.
Their son wants to be an artist too, but youth keeps him distracted... slowly he comes around, learning the discipline and excitement of his craft, until he is not only painting eggs (better than his folks, I might add) but cars and bridges and houses and airplanes and flag poles, too. Wonderful story about growing up and learning, with lovely illustrations painted in shades of the season.
Happy spring everyone!Also by:

Ooh, I like this one, too, and most certainly alongside 'The Easter Bunny That Overslept'. I'd love to see Ms. Adams' work in person; I wonder how those color washes would look up close? Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHow funny that you are reviewing this book today. I just read this to my kids last night!

My boys and I read this and "The Easter Bunny That Overslept" last night too. Wonderful illustrations in both!
ReplyDeleteThe three books you mentioned in this post were my favorite Easter books as a kid. :)
ReplyDeleteOh I *really* like these illustrations.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I remember reading this as a child. Thanks for mentioning it!
ReplyDeleteI love all the Abbott stories - my favorite is the Christmas Party, because I grew up with that one. Sadly, it disappeared at some point...there's also a Valentine's Day one!
ReplyDeleteOkay, it really is eerie how often your posts dovetail with something that we've been reading over here. We just purchased used copy of A Halloween Happening which was illustrated by Adrienne Adams. I thought the illustrations were brilliant and I'm so looking forward to finding more of her work!
ReplyDeleteWhile I'm here I wanted to ask if you've heard of a book called The Witches of Venice by Ben Montresor? I came across it a while ago and just read it the other day and I thought it was great fun! It looks like something you might enjoy as well!
I totally remember this book and haven't thought of it in ages. Loved the book and your post.
ReplyDeleteLate to post as usual...this was one of my favorite books as a child. Seeing this has brought tears to my eyes. Its so beautiful. The illustrations capture the bunnies thoughts and feelings so well
